Stephen carved and sanded this woodblock for a commissioned edition with RAPS (Rutgers Archive for Printmaking Studios). From the beginning, we knew it would be printed as if it was an intaglio (or collagraph), inking and wiping with tarlatan. Therefore, the darkest reds are the cuts in the wood. Lightening was accomplished by sanding and painting of acrylic medium onto the wood surface. The gray was what I call tarlatan-inked, a method possible only with two distinct surfaces and colors.
Stephen's primary media are drawing and sculpture. He and I had previously worked together on the print, Isolate, also in this section. For more of his work, visit stephentalasnik.com
