Kingsley Parker
Using multiple print media, Parker created a multi-layered symbolic and emotional response to things he was reading and viewing; he used a diagram from an actual slave ship to make the etching plate. With the etching plate printed 3 consecutive times in lower and lower positions, without re-inking, the bodies become barely discernible, seeming to sink into the vast blue water. Yet they are made present by the increased embossment of the etching plate into the paper. Juxtaposed to the ocean blue is the white chine colle paper, symbolizing the ship. Here the figures are clear in their contrasted color and one sees their cramped multitude. The gestural motions of the brown symbolize to me, in part, the artist's emotional reactions to the subject.
