Our Featured Print is David Shapiro's Kala (1).
This richly colored print was the start of a series of 6 Kalas David did at Yama, each on different papers with the same size image (12.75" x 7.75") and format of upper and lower panels. This image has some of David's signature iconography, including at the time, circles and linear elements achieved for the upper panel by dipping metal objects into carborundum paste, then stamped onto plexiglass and printed in dark red. The few bright red lines in the upper panel are drypoint in plexi and, in the lower, a photo-etched plate from a commercial platemaker created the partial concentric circles. The gold in the upper panel was a surface roll.
Edition size of this and the other 5 Kalas in the series: 20.
I have one of each available for sale. They are viewable in the Etching and the Carborundum Collagraph Portfolios of this website throughout June 2022, David's birthday month.
PLEASE NOTE: Kala 7 is not from this series. Also, this print is known and signed as Kala without a numerical designation, as the series idea was not yet formulated.
